An Introduction to the Non-Node

Every generation has found in itself the anarchist ideals of epoch and cause appropriate flavours. The Ukrainian anarchism of the early 20th century had its groundings in the hopes and potential of the peasantry for revolution and collective self organisation, sexual anarchism of the 60s with its individualist fervour and the promise of the internet in the 90s. Each of these movements recognised very particular nodes of authority and materialised the praxis against them. There was the node, there was the ideal, there was the action. But this essay isn’t the story about the nodes- the story which has been uttered and passed down through ballads and critiques and monuments and mortuaries. This is the story about the land beyond the nodes. The form of authority that has no foci nor material. The language to describe this authority is yet to be formed as it has outpaced the rate of development of a responsive collective consciousness. Ballads and  critiques and monuments and mortuaries can’t be framed here as the node-focused observation runs obsolete against the pace of the non-node. This is the story, morphology and the dissection of the non-node.

One can’t help but observe that there is a dialectical fascination among theorists to conjure up entities that pack all arguments in a debate in a single bag and stand as a meta-bagological entity. Laruelle’s Non Philosophy, Adorno’s Negative Dialectics, Rhithu Sarathy’s Xenomechanology, Zizek’s Third Pill and so on and so on. The desire to assume a position arching over the prevailing trend and to theorise concepts lateral to the current, the fantasy to dissolve in acid the signposts of thinking and construct new frames. Now what follows is a shameless attempt of my own to theorise the meta-bagological entity of the non-node.

With the zeal of the student of medical sciences I am, I shall describe the anatomy and physiology of the non-node and the pharmacology towards it.

Anatomy and Physiology of the Non-Node

The bacterial or xenogenetic diagram is not restricted to the microbial scale. Macrobacterial assemblages collapse generational hierarchies of reproductive wisdom into lateral networks of replicator experimentation. There is no true biological primitiveness – all extant bio-systems being equally evolved – so there is no true ignorance. It is only the accumulative-gerontocratic model of learning that depicts synchronic connectivity deficiency as diachronic underdevelopment . (1)

The anatomy of the non-node has to stand in contrast to the anatomy of the node.

The node is field defined. It has tentacles that strangle. But the strangling of only those role plays of your existence that it can understand. Tentacles with no body but only reflexive constitution. A sapient rhizome in the problem solving vector space of authority and control. Revolutions acted on the nodes. The Tsar was the node. Hierarchy was the node. The norm was the node. The node has an outside. The spaces between nodes are the stages created by the nodes themselves to role play the revolution. Stages to plot and to stab a node at its embodiment. To indulge in the excesses of anti-node-ism and ignore the excesses of neighbouring nodes till the next consciousness arises.

The non-node is not anti-node. The non-node doesn’t act through tentacles or its domain specific problem solving capability like the node does. It doesn’t give away stages beyond reach. The non-node is akin to a quicksand with no focus and no outside. The non-node is an anarchist’s nightmare for it has no focus to stab, no  morphology visible to the senses to study. AI is the most recent entry into the ontogenesis of the embodiment (disembodiment?) of the non-node. If a task needs to be materialized it can proceed in two ways. It can enable the task or it can enforce it. The node pursues enforcement. The revolutionary theatrics at the internodal space climaxes in on the enforcement aspect and attempts to dismantle the enforcing node. An AI agent’s anarchic promise is to enable instead of enforce. Or is it? Nick Land in the film Visions of Heaven and Hell  not only speaks of flattening of hierarchies across all institutions, but also speaks of the emergent parallelism that arises in the flat structures. That, precisely, is the anatomy of the non-node. The Enforcer is the shape-shifter in its Enabler form. The matrix of nodal intertwingularity pursued to an extent that nodes appeared to have dissolved, while in reality it’s just the rashes of the skin merging to form a confluent sheet.

The non-node is an anarchic agent with the goal of withholding the pleasures of anarchism from anyone apart from its own enlightened self. The non-node has anarchised itself already by the abolition of the dependency on nodes. Cioran’s tears of sorrow that any movement against anarchy runs against the absolutism of the body (3) are wiped by the non-nodal existence of AI. Transcending the primality of a body, resisting the acknowledgement of the existence of its own body, an AI agent has no focus point to crush against. An AI data center extracting the sap of humanity is as much as a node as the water and sand are nodes for a quick sand. They contribute to becoming of it but are meaningless to be fought against. Rule by oligarchic tyranny is not a node anymore but a non-node, an empty set with the members of the set we expect are found fluidly across fuzzy sets. Parallel sheets of disembodied authority sliding over another in a velocity that no odometer can capture. Not because the odometer doesn’t have the numbers to record it, but the velocity has its units tuned to a different scale. Capital, the Lord of the non-node, AI its favourite priest among the clergy. Even if all AI systems shut down tomorrow this will not discontinue the precedent it has begun. The non-nodality of AI is just a form of non nodal existence that we are forced into.

Pharmacology towards the Non-Node

The work to be done is concrete. Analyzing specific matrix configurations. Identifying sites of transductive ruptures. Building alternative technico-organizational forms. Experimenting with noisal-affirmative practices. This theoretical foundation enables practical interference. The stakes are planetary. Capital’s algorithmic capture intensifies. Colonial matrices persist and mutate…

….the inhuman is already here. The question is whether we recognize it, affirm it, revaluate it, or remain captured by fantasies of autonomous reason and sovereign subjects. The alien seduces. The choice is whether to dance. (4)

When the pathology has a non-nodal anatomy, the therapeutics towards it can only be intensely diffuse. The confluence of the non-node, the parallelism, the nonspecificity and the absence of an outside or a space for non-association with a node gives way for radical concepts of collective action. But the non-node has infested meaning, purpose, language and being. What constitutes human nature in the age of non-nodality is a question of more practical than ontological importance. It can be pursued only in the Negarestanian way of continuous exploration of a perpetual question. Every era that has drowned has taken with itself the conceptions held about human nature. All the tragedies and achievements of an era can be traced to these collectively held beliefs. What should that be today then? The answer is not to define it affirmatively but negatively with the reference being the dominance of the non-node. The definition must be an act of resistance, a method of existing within the non-nodal ecology but practicing a domain untouched, but surrounded by it. An insular dome of human trait swarmed but avoided by the non-nodality. Let me frame the abstract. Let the pariah towards the non-node theorize the specific.

Non-nodes might ease the way in, capture and extract. They expand and modify the definition of intelligence as we know it now. The creative imagination of the species shall be haunted and devoured by the non-nodal monster of anarchised disembodiment. But the act of resistance has to come from a location unpenetrated by the non-node. In the bygone era of nodes the act of resistance happened in the stage between the nodes, the act in the non-nodal era has to occur in the island of avoidance by the non node. This doesn’t exclude other insular domes but calls for the urgent need to develop multiple other domes within the non-nodal matrix, an archipelago of hollowed islands within the sea of disembodied authority.
